\"DanWHEN Dan Gracie gave up his faith aged 17 he isolated himself from his family, friends, and the church bands he played in.<\/p>\n

He put down his guitar and got on with a life of atheism. But as he got older he began to wonder whether he\u2019d made the right decision.<\/p>\n

Now back in the fold of Leigh Road Baptist Church, he writes music for the church\u2019s youth services, aimed at re-connecting young people with God and engaging them in church life, by making it relevant.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I gave up my faith at 17, it was very hard,\u201d explains Dan, 31, of London Road, Westcliff.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy life was pretty much built around it, my friends were from church, my family were Christians, I\u2019d played in a church band. I had to give up a lot of things and it was very difficult for my parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurning away from it was partly because I\u2019d grown up as a Christian and by the time I was 17, it had become apparent to me I was living out my parents\u2019 beliefs and my friends\u2019 and the church\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found it very enjoyable for a long time, but as I got a little bit older I started to wonder whether there might be a lot more to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

They say God works in mysterious ways and he certainly didn\u2019t re-connect with Dan in a traditional manner.<\/p>\n

The musician re-discovered his faith after watching comedy film Bruce Almighty, in which Jim Carey\u2019s character encounters God and is lent his powers, after complaining that he\u2019s not doing his job properly \u2013 prompting immediate chaos.<\/p>\n

It struck a chord with Dan, after Bruce asked God why he couldn\u2019t make his existence more obvious to people on earth \u2013 through intervening more to ensure everyone lives happily.<\/p>\n

God replied he could not do that because it was important people retained free will.<\/p>\n

Dan says: \u201cI\u2019d been asking the question \u2018if he was out there why wouldn\u2019t it just be obvious?\u2019 but then I thought \u2018well would that be a real relationship or just a dictatorship?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I could think to do was read the Bible. I got up early every morning for two weeks and read through the four gospels. By the end it just became real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with his faith, Dan rediscovered his love of music \u2013 something he\u2019d grown up with, but given up along with the church.<\/p>\n

He says: \u201cInterestingly, the night I became a Christian I wrote a song that I still use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like music, but I prefer it when it\u2019s about something. A lot of bands just sing for themselves, but that\u2019s not the case with Christian music.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2009 Dan and two of his friends formed Christian rock band Lazarus Rose \u2013 which made it to the finals of Southend Council\u2019s Battle of the Bands the next year.<\/p>\n

The band eventually proved too much of a commitment for all three members, who were juggling performing with work and families.<\/p>\n

Dan is now concentrating on his solo material \u2013 hoping to release an album later this year \u2013 and writing music for the church.<\/p>\n

He works with a team trying out fresh ways of making the church relevant to younger members \u2013 through new music and also by encouraging them to speak during services and through the use of visual big screen presentations to illustrate the talks.<\/p>\n

Explaining how writing religious music is a different challenge to composing for Lazarus Rose, he adds: \u201cIt\u2019s got to be theologically sound and relevant, because if you think \u2018that doesn\u2019t apply to me\u2019 you\u2019ll stop singing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t write anything new in a sense, yet there needs to be a fresh way of looking at it, new imagery.<\/p>\n

\u201cHymns were written as poems in the 1800s and 1900s and put to the most contemporary music of the day, so it\u2019s not a new idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmazing Grace was written as a poem and it was sung to many different tunes of the day, it\u2019s just that one of them became really popular.\u201d<\/p>\n
