Super Saturday Photos: Leigh-on-Sea Celebrates a day of Olympic Gold together

We had a fantastic day on Saturday 4th August celebrating a day of Olympic finals together as part of More Than Gold and the Local Leaders programme.

The morning saw and wonderful All Day Breakfast with Big Screen Action, and we were joined by Team GB’s Paralympian Goalball athlete Anna Sharkey, who gave us a great insight into her sport, her excitement about being in the London 2012 Paralympics and representing Great Britain. Anna also spoke about how her Faith is integral to all parts of her life.

The afternoon saw hundreds gather together for a fun day, with bouncy castles, inflatable assault courses and face painting. Dads and children enjoyed racing on the assault course! Once again there was lots of action beamed live by the fantastic BBC to our Big Screen. Refreshments were provided by Oasis The Coffee House and the cake and coffee went down a treat.

The evening saw an electric night of action form the Olympic Stadium, as folk form the neighbourhood enjoyed good food from Fish Rocks and Pure Spice while cheering on our Golden athletes.

Please visit the Medal Podium Photos news item, where photos are now available for you to download.

Andy Frost speaks to crowd

POPULAR Christian band Phatfish and singer Lou Fellingham hit the right notes when more than 230 people packed into Leigh Road Baptist Church to experience the final leg of The Jesus Tour.

Lou Fellingham and PhatfishThe Sunday service took on a whole new meaning as worship music combined with award-winning stunning visuals depicting the life of Jesus took over the Sanctuary last weekend.

Aided by speaker Andy Frost, who took the 234-strong audience through Holy Week, those attending were certainly left with spiritual food for thought as they trudged home afterwards in the now-seasonal rain.

The event began with a 30-mAndy Frost of SJI speaks as part of The Jesus Tourinute worship session led by Lou and Phatfish, as the scene was set for Andy to deliver his hard-hitting message.Lou Fellingham sings

Each day of final week of the life of Jesus on earth was explained, aided by powerful images on the big screen.

The band then took to the specially-adapted stage – complete with speakers and feature lighting – to finish the evening with a final session.Phatfish guitarists

With arms aloft and eyes towards the audience, blonde-haired singer Lou left challenges with those watching as she wrapped up the two-hour event.

Jacqueline Pawsey was one of those who enjoyed the evening. She said: “It certainly was great! Well done to everyone to make it a fantastic evening! Thanks to you and the biggest thanks to Jesus!”

Lou and Nathan FellinghamLeigh Road churchgoer Alan Cook, 44, added: “It certainly was challenging. “The music was very uplifting and the message by Andy Frost extremely powerful and thought-provoking.”

Amongst those enjoying the concert-cum-worship session was Leigh Road Baptist Church minister Steven Hembery. He said: “It was great to see people of all ages coming together and worshiping. “The band was fantastic and the spiritual message spot on. “Well done to all those who took part and helped organise the event.”

The Jesus tour has already visited a number of venues around the country, and Leigh Road were able to drop the ticket price for young people from £10 to half price on the night which helped swell the numbers.

Great atmosphere for church Euro 2012 big screen showings, dispite England’s exit

Euro 2012 England Matches shown at Leigh Road Baptist Church

Even divine inspiration from above was not enough for footy fans who packed into a church hall last night (SUN) to watch England lose 4-2 on penalties to Italy in their nail-biting Euro 2012 quarter final match.

There were gasps of joy then anguish from the 100 supporters as first Ashley Young and then Ashley Cole missed from the spot as the normal Sunday service took on a whole new meaning with churchgoers watching  the game on a giant screen at Leigh Road Baptist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

When former West Ham player Diamante sealed the win it was down-faces all round.

Dispair: Euro 2012 England Matches shonw at Leigh Road Baptist Church

Patriotic flags had adorned the church as it was  transformed on the holy day into a sanctuary for the cross of St George. It was the fourth time that England games have been screened there during the tournament.

Barbecues, drinks and cupcakes have all been provided free of charge to fans of all ages as they watched Gerrard and co.

Minister Rev Steven Hembery , 61, who supports Ipswich Town, said: “It was a really tense game and it could have gone one way or the other. “But it’s always heartbreaking to lose on penalties. But I suppose we should be used to it now.”

He added: “We have just had a new hall built and extra facilities which we always promised would be used for the community. “The games screened at the church have been really well attended. “It has been a good atmosphere but also a safe one where parents can bring their children and watch the game with pals. “Lads from our football team have come along too with their partners and fans of all ages have been packing out the pews.”

Churchgoer Alan Cook, 44, is one of those who has watched all the England games at Leigh Road. Father-of-four Alan, from Leigh-on-Sea, said: “The Italians deserved the win overall – but I still feel gutted. “We don’t have a TV licence so it has been a real Godsend to be able to watch the games here on the giant screen. “Two of my boys – Luke and Matthew – are real footy fans and have enjoyed being able to see their heroes in a safe and happy atmosphere.”

Seven-year-old England fan Enrico Lo Turco – who is half-Italian – added: “I’m supporting England because they are my favourites but will cheer for Italy when they play Germany.

“I was cheering for Rooney throughout the match but am really upset we have lost. But at least I got to stay out late!”

Before each game, fans had taken part in a soccer stats competition where they predict the scorers, the number of shots, the score and fouls committed. At the end of the 90mins a winner is announced.

Celebration: Euro 2012 England Matches shown at Leigh Road Baptist Church

Jonathan and Heather Pickford, church member and one of the event organisers at Leigh Road Baptist, said: “Each game the screen has got bigger. We started off in an upstairs room for the France game, moved to one of our halls for the Sweden game and held the Ukraine screening in the church itself!

“A lot of people at the church love football as well as God. So it has been the perfect combination. “The cross of St George fits perfectly with the surroundings of the church.”

The church also showed the Euro Cup final, which was well attended – despite England being out.

Rain did not dampen spirits at Maguerite Drive Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch

The rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of Marguerite Drive residents who turned out to celebrate the Queens Jubilee and the Big Lunch on Sunday 3rd June.

The afternoon went with a swing with music provided by talented residents Deborah and Guy DeCruz and Mick Felgate, with fun and games organised by Deborah DeCruz and Joan Felgate.

Leigh Road Baptist Church (LRBC) saved the day with the loan of their beautiful new hall, festively decorated with bunting and balloons with the help of the ever resourceful David Elcock, community worker with LRBC.

Matt Williams, a Margurite Drive Resident said:
“It’s amazing having lived in our road for 14 years that I didn’t even know people living 100 yards away from me.  The great thing about an event like this is that it brings the community together, you make new friends and it is amazing, now we walk down the road and wave and smile at our neighbours.”

Over 1,000 people explored the Easter Story in Leigh on Easter Saturday.

2012 Easter Fun Day in Leigh Library GardensThanks to volunteers from LRBC & Churches Together in Leigh, over 450 children and their families took part in an Easter Story Egg Hunt in Leigh Library Gardens on Saturday 7 April.

Crowds of people braved the chilly weather and were able to discover and answer questions about what happened during Holy Week 2000 years ago.

They were also gently challenged regarding what the Easter message could mean to them today.

The eggs were provided courtesy of Waitrose. A BIG thank you to all those who gave up their time and prayed for the event. Without you this could not happen.
