Half term fun that doesn’t break the bank promised for families across Leigh-on-Sea and Westcliff-on-Sea

Childrens Festival 2015 Banner

FROM football to films and craft to colouring a half-term of fun is promised at the Children’s Festival 2015.

A range of activities for youngsters aged from 3-11 is on the agenda at the week-long celebration organised by local churches in the Westcliff-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea area.

A series of events are to be held at venues across the two towns from Monday October 26 to Saturday October 31.

The Children’s Festival 2015 is being run by volunteers and helpers from Leigh Road Baptist, West Leigh and Westcliff Baptist Churches.

Emma Nash, festival organiser, said: “Three local churches are working together to offer families fun things to do together in half-term, which does not cost the earth.

“We want to meet local people and hopefully start some new friendships with them.”

The fun begins with a story time and craft session with children’s author Amanda Brandon, suitable for youngsters aged 3-8, at 1150, West Leigh Baptist Church, London Road, Leigh-on-Sea, on Monday October 26 from 10am-12noon. Tickets are £1 per child, with parents expected to stay.

On Tuesday a football tournament kicks off for anyone aged between 8-11 – with medals for all players – at Chalkwell Park, Westcliff, from 10am-12.15pm. Parents are welcome to watch and stay although this is not essential at the event being held near the London Road entrance. Tickets are £2 per child with pre-booking required.

For those who enjoy being crafty then why not pop along to the Messy Family Fun events at Leigh Road Baptist Church, Marguerite Drive, Leigh-on-Sea, on both the Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am-12.30 pm.

Children aged from three upwards and their parents/carers will have an opportunity to try crazy crafts, hear stories from the life of Jesus and learn new skills. Tickets cost £2 per person with lunch provided! Some tickets will be available at the door.

Budding artists from three upwards are invited to a Colouring Fun afternoon at Westcliff Baptist Church, London Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, on Wednesday (Oct 28). Admission is 50p per person with some tickets available on the day.

And for those looking for a comfy seat and a good film then the screening of Paddington (PG cert) could be just the ticket on Thursday (Oct 29) at Westcliff Baptist Church from 2pm-4pm. Admission is free. Pre-booking is not required so just turn up on the day and enjoy.

An interactive and fun hand drum music workshop suitable for ages 4-11 led by professional drummer Steve Cooper is being held West Leigh Baptist Church on Friday from 10am-12noon. Cost is £2 per child with pre-booking essential.

Those enjoying making a racquet may enjoy an Open Afternoon at Leigh Road Baptist Tennis Club on Friday from 12 noon-3pm. Suitable for all ages with a cost of just 50p per person. All equipment supplied, but please wear appropriate footwear.

The week-long festival culminates with a morning Celebration Party at Leigh Road Baptist Church on Saturday (Oct 31) from 10am-12 noon. Fun for all the family, with games, crafts, Bible stories and a magic show. Tickets cost £2.50 per person with some available on the day.

Parents are expected to stay at all events, except for the football tournament. There is no charge at any event for children aged two and under.

Join us on Sunday mornings through June and July 2015 for our series ‘Courageous living in turbulent times’ an exploration based on the Book of Daniel in the Bible.

Daniel was an intelligent teenager with the bright future, until an invading nation took over his homeland. Transported over 1000 miles to a foreign country how did he not only survive, but thrive to become a respected government worker for nearly 70 years. In it all Daniel maintained his faith and integrity. Are there any lessons for 21st century Christians living in modern Britain? “Courageous living in turbulent times” is a talk series designed to help us apply lessons from Daniel to our own lives.

Remembrance Sunday – The Walking, Talking Armistice.

If I should die think only this
… A bullet flew by that did not miss…

What story of the war is told?
Romance bright or horror cold?
Triumph’s tale or tragic loss,
the iron or the wooden cross?
Lost lament or victor’s boast?
Full brass band or lone last post?
Heroes, villains, cowards, kings?
It’s war… it’s all these things.

It’s us unleashed for good and ill,
the gallant heart, the savage will.
A Kaiser’s pride, a nation’s fear,
a global greed, it’s all in here.

What causes war, the old book asks?
Beyond the history, beneath the masks,
There grows a want, becomes a will,
demands our way, prepares to kill.

The war we mark as long ago,
is close to home, it’s all we know.
What ceases war? The pressing question.
What can halt inborn aggression?
To end all wars and retribution –
war itself is no solution.

Can terror end all terror now?
Brute force subdue itself and bow?
Can darkness drive out darkened dread?
Or death extinguish death instead?

We need to interrupt the spiral.
A healing antiretroviral.
The story’s told of an Anti-Zeus –
A God of Peace turned Human Truce.
Into our world, into our midst –
a walking, talking armistice.

A King made meek, a power made weak,
to stand and turn the other cheek,
to take the blow, absorb disgrace,
and rise to give again His face.
In grace undimmed and arms unfurled,
to bless and pacify the world…

…and you – to sweet surrender brought,
forgiveness for your battles fought,
a peace to pass to every soul,
then warfare ceased from pole to pole.

Halloween: Trick or Treat? Leigh Road #BooFest!

Vast armies undead do tread through the night and
In hordes march towards hapless victims to frighten.
They stumble in step with glass-eyes on the prizes;
Bunched hither, hunched over in monstrous disguises;
In sizes not lofty but numb’ring a throng;
To unleash on their prey the dreaded DING DONG.
Small faces with traces of mother’s eye-liner,
Peer up to the resident candy provider.

And there to intone ancient threats learnt verbatim;
They lisp “TRICK OR TREAT!” Tis their stark ultimatum.
Thus: region by region such legions take plunder.
Does this spector-full spectacle cause you to wonder?
Just how did our fair festive forebears conceive,
Of this primeval practice called All Hallows Eve?
The answer, if anyone cares to research,
Surprises, it rises from old mother church.

On the cusp of the customary All Saints Day
The Christ-i-an kinsfolk made mocking display.
These children of light both to tease and deride;
Don darkness, doll down as the sinister side.
In pre-post-er-ous pageants and dress diabolic,
They hand to the damned just one final frolick.
You see with the light of the dawn on the morrow,
The sunrise will swallow such darkness and sorrow.

The future is futile for forces of evil;
And so they did scorn them in times Medieval.
For this is the nature of shadow and gloom;
In the gleaming of glory there can be no room.
What force is resourced by the echoing black?
When the brightness ignites can the shadow push back?
These ‘powers’ of darkness, if such can be called,
Are banished by brilliance, by blazing enthralled.

So the bible begins with this fore-resolved fight;
For a moment the darkness…. then “Let there be Light!”
First grief in the gloom, then joy from the East.
First valley of shadow, then mountaintop feast.
First wait for Messiah, then long-promised Dawn.
First desolate Friday and then Easter Morn.
The armies of darkness when doing their worst,
Can never extinguish this Dazzling Sunburst.

So… ridicule rogues if you must play a role;
But beware getting lost in that bottomless hole.
The triumph is not with the forces of night.
It dawned with the One who said “I am the Light!”

You are always welcome to join with us as we explore each Sunday who Jesus the light who expels all darkness is.
