Romans

The 31st October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation, when Martin Luther nailed his thoughts to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany. It seemed fitting to mark this anniversary by looking at Paul’s letter to the Romans this autumn.  Romans was a key text for Martin Luther and it has been a key text for Protestant Christians ever since in their understanding of ‘justification by faith’ – in other words, the doctrine that we are saved, not by being good, but by trusting in the God who saves us through his grace and mercy by means of the cross of Christ. From September to Advent 2017 we will be finding out more about Pauls Letter to the Romans.

Four Kinds of Christmas

In our Advent series we will consider four kinds of Christmas. Scrooges yell “bah, humbug!” and wish everyone would stop being so blooming cheerful. Shoppers max out the credit card, their motto ‘eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.’ Santas delight in the joy of the season, turning a blind eye to anything which might mar their perfect family Christmas. But the Christian hope of the Stable of Bethlehem is that Christ comes to us in the midst of our brokenness, offering us not superficial cheerfulness but profound and lasting hope.
