Leigh Road Baptist Church website wins Accessibility Award 2011

With the adoption of new technology by churches and Christian organisations, blind and partially sighted people are facing an additional struggle; a term Dr Mike Townsend from Torch Trust has termed ‘Web-sight loss’.

Dr Townsend judged the Accessibility Award category of the Premier Christian Media’s 5th Annual Christian New Media Awards (CNMAs) which recognised websites that delivered an exemplary commitment to accessibility.

Presenting the Award, accompanied by his guide dog, Tom, he said, “Jesus was a great communicator. He communicated with all kinds of people. My judging was an interesting journey. But, some of my journeys couldn’t even get started. A real case web-sight loss!”

He continued, “The Leigh Road Baptist Church website was excellent. I really know what’s going on. It almost makes me want to move to Leigh-on-Sea!”

Commenting on the awards, Dr Gordon Temple, Chief Executive of Torch Trust questions whether the Church is grasping the concept of accessibility, pressing that it ought to be second nature to do so.

He said, “The gospel is inclusive – Jesus was inclusive, and went out of his way to include people with disabilities

We’re supporting this Award because it’s important that web and media resources are accessible to all. It should be the norm for the Christian church; a Gospel for all, and a heart for all because we don’t want to see anyone left out.”

David Elcock, Community Worker for Leigh Road Baptist Church commented on the award, “We worked with Ecru.co.uk to create our site which launched in April of this year. We and ECRU – a Leigh-on-Sea based web design agency believe the right website is crucial in encouraging people to interact with the church, Matt, Sarah and Andy of ECRU were rigorous in their approach to accommodating the real-world needs of people with disabilities.”

Matt Williams, Managing Director of ECRU said, ”We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with David Elcock on the Leigh Road Baptist Church website – we experienced a real meeting of minds when it came to the spirit underlying the project, with a shared focus on fostering communication with real people, whatever their age or ability.”

David Elcock, continued, “Working with Matt, Sarah and Andy of Ecru.co.uk to create the new site that launched in April of this year has been a joy. We are really happy that it has already been recognised for its accessibility through the Premier CNMAs. ECRU have been excellent in helping LRBC with their expertise in creating a truly useful and accessible website that works for us as a church in our attempt to reach out to all the people of our community. We couldn’t recommend them enough.”

The evening which took place St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London on 14th October, was hosted by Premier Christian Radio Presenter, Maria Rodrigues-Toth and Dr. Krish Kandiah, Executive Director: Churches in Mission and England Director for the UK Evangelical Alliance.

If you need to get the free app

You need to downolad the YouVersion Bible App to your mobile device (if you don’t already have it) – just visit www.youversion.com/download on your mobile device (it’s free).

When you have the App

LRBC Online selected as a finalist in the Christian New Media Awards 2011

Christian New Media Awards 2011 Finalist Logo

The team at Leigh Road Baptist Church are just a tad excited. We have recently heard that we have been selected as a finalist in the Christian New Media Awards 2011.

The judges are at present working their way through the final stage of the judging process; if they decide we are either a winner or runner up, then we’ll be invited to the awards ceremony on Friday 14th October in London – how very black tie!

LRBC Online has been shortlisted in the Accesibility Award category.

Matt Williams, Managing Director of ECRU said, “We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with David Elcock on the Leigh Road Baptist Church website – we experienced a real meeting of minds when it came to the spirit underlying the project, with a shared focus on fostering communication with real people, whatever their age or ability.”

David Elcock, Creative Worker at LRBC added, “Social media plays a big part in the LRBC.org.uk website, with Twitter and Facebook integration, embodying the spirit of a church that goes out and meets the community where they are”.

Sarah Lennard-Brown, ECRU Director, commented, “Attracting people into the website, and into the church, is also crucial. Our rigorous approach of accommodating the real-world needs of disabled people when they access information has proven time and again to pay off, because it results in a website that is not only technically accessible i.e. that it enables people with disabilities to access information – it also results in websites that are usable by the widest range of people, regardless of ability. Everyone benefits from this greater clarity of communication.”

David Elcock, continued, “Working with Matt and Sarah of Ecru.co.uk to create the new site that launched in April of this year has been a joy. We are really happy that it has already been recognised for its accessibility. ECRU have been excellent in helping LRBC with their expertise in creating a truly useful and accessible website that works for us as a church in our attempt to reach out to the people of our community. We couldn’t recommend them enough.”

It is evident from our experience that ECRU are an energetic and highly skilled web design agency, passionate about creating entrancing websites that have transformed ours and others ability to communicate with our audience.

Leigh Road Baptist Church wished all the best to the other finalists.

Pre-school children bury BUILD time capsule at LRBC

Burying the LRBC Time Capsule

MEDIA RELEASE
For immediate release Thursday 8th September 2011

Children from Leigh Road Baptist Church Pre-school buried a time-capsule today on the site of Leigh Road Baptist Church’s new building development.

Leigh Road Baptist Church (LRBC) embarked on a £1 million re-development project for their home on Marguerite Drive, Leigh-on-Sea in May of this year.

The work which aims to be completed by the end of 2011 will provide:

  • a new inviting glass landmark entrance and meeting area
  • a bright and inviting worship and performance space seating around 250-300
  • an enhanced community hall for events, sports and celebrations
  • a new purpose built pre-school facility with internal open-air safe play area
  • a beautiful garden and open-air events space for all to enjoy

The children and staff of the pre-school were joined by LRBC Senior Minister, Rev Steven Hembery, Graham Milne and Tom Lawrence of building contractors T.J. Evers Ltd, LRBC Pre-school Managers Jannette Land and Liz Kelly and finally by Jane Brookes LRBC BUILD Project Coordinator.

The time capsule contains local items that show of snapshot of life in LRBC, Leigh-on-Sea and national news on this day in history. Local and national newspapers, photos and programmes of the many groups that meet at the church, a Bible and details of the other community services that are held from the church island site, as well as some work of the pre-school children.

An archive of  church website for this day was also buried on a memory stick along with some sample recordings of different church services from LRBC’s weekly podcast.

Steven Hembery said, “We are delighted that every week hundreds of people use the church premises for a multitude of activities. We currently provide a coffee shop, community centre, auditorium, halls, retail outlets and warehouse facilities. However, we desperately needed to modernise our premises – the new development will help us to serve and welcome our neighbourhood more fully. The new upgraded hi-tech worship area, will also allow us to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ in a relevant and accessible way.

Jane Brookes, Project Coordinator added, “LRBC is transforming its complex by enhancing the Pre-School and community facilities. We are creating a contemporary, visible and inviting landmark that drives forward and builds upon over 100 years of services for the people of Leigh.

Until the work is the completed, the church is open for business as usual, with Sunday services and many of the weekly activities still taking place. Updates on what’s on, where and when can be found on the LRBC website www.lrbc.org.uk

Notes for Editiors

Join us in changing lives in our community

We are delighted that every week hundreds of people use the premises of Leigh Road Baptist Church (LRBC) for a multitude of activities. We currently provide a coffee shop, community centre, auditorium, halls, retail outlets and warehouse facilities.
Alongside working with the elderly, we are heavily involved in early years development with our Pre-School. We have appreciative parents, excellent staff and externally recognised standards in teaching quality. However, we now need modern fit for purpose premises to deliver a complete service.

LRBC is transforming its complex by enhancing the Pre-School and community facilities. We are creating a contemporary, visible and inviting landmark that drives forward and builds upon over 100 years of services for the people of Leigh.
Transformed facilities, increased opportunities

Over recent years the entire island site has been secured by LRBC for community use. This prominent, prime, accessible location for the surrounding community now fronts onto the four surrounding roads.

We aim to develop new high quality premises that will provide facilities meeting the needs of the local population. This will allow us to enhance the services we provide for children, youth, families and the elderly within our community.

This will result in a healthy community creating more jobs and volunteering opportunities for local people.

We see this as the continuation of a long and sustained investment in the people and families of our neighbourhood.
1993 – Purchase of island site, opening of Oasis our community coffee house and provision of three flats, two of which provide for low-income families
2000 – Development and opening of The Stables function suite for the whole community
2009 – Upgrading and decoration of the auditorium for public performance
2011 – Development of new pre-school facility, new main open glass entrance, improved worship and performance space and sports and events hall enhancement

Who else will benefit from the project?
Once a week LRBC runs a toddler group that benefits over 150 families. This provides space for children to play safely and parents/carers to relax and meet with other adults. The new open welcome area, meeting spaces and bright and spacious hall facilities would also benefit youth and schools, community theatre, elderly and interest groups that frequent the premises weekly.

Funding the project
The vast majority of this project is being paid for by church members with over £600,000 pledged and donated so far. We are also very grateful for a grant given to us by the Cory Environmental Trust and a loan form the Baptist Union of Great Britain to help in this project. However, the entire project is costing £1 million we are therefore looking for partners who believe in the services we provide to help us with the shortfall. More information on the project, as well as fundraising and development updates, and an online giving page can be found on the project website at www.lrbc.org.uk/build

It’s getting there – some real progress on the Build project

Building work at LRBC has reached a landmark stage this week as the external steelwork which will form the new welcome area was put in place.

If you are in the area it’s well worth walking round to have a look – from behind the safety barriers of course.

The shape of the new building is now a lot more obvious.

On the buses with Route One and LRBC

Route One Bus Leigh Road Baptist Church is a big supporter of the work of the Route One project.

What is Route One?
Route One is a Christian education and outreach resource based in the South-East of Essex. It aims to be an educational resource for local Secondary Schools, to supplement the delivery of the R.E. and P.S.E. national curriculum’s.

In addition to this Route One is designed to help train, equip and give experience to churches enabling them to effectively outreach and communicate the message of Jesus within their local community.

To do this they have developed an interactive exhibition on board a double-decker bus. The resource is a unique and inspiring environment aiming to help people explore the significance of Jesus and the message of the Bible. It’s multi-media dual purpose means it can be used to deliver a variety of interactive lessons in schools or, alternatively, for outreach in town centres and at community events.

An evening with the YMCA

YMCA at LRBCLRBC, has already utilised this great resource in October of 2010 when we hosted an evening with the Southend YMCA. A group from the Ambleside Drive centre came to visit us. During the evening volunteers from the Space (the 14-18 years old) youth group at LRBC were able to communicate both the message of Christianity and what Church is.

The bus worked really well as the venue for the ‘What is Christianity?’ part of the evening while a tour of the church building provided a fitting environment to talk about Church.

The young people from LRBC did a great job of communicating their faith both on the bus and in the building. The guys from the YMCA asked some fantastic questions and it was great to hear their thoughts on Christianity and Faith.

A continuing relationship
Since this event the relationships of LRBC with the YMCA and Route One have continued. In December of 2010 the LRBC youth group had a Indian Meal along the Leigh Road with representatives from the YMCA. Here they of course had great food (which always helps), but also heard about a YMCA project called Team YP. This project gives young people the opportunity to take part in physical and recreational activities and some of those who attended the evening signed up to give their time.

On the buses
Amy Rotherham, a volunteer with young people at LRBC, who is currently taking a year out before university, was so inspired by Route One she got more involved.

The Bus recently went into Greensward Academy in Hockley and King Edmund School in Rochford.

Amy R on Route OneIn Greensward they were asked to do lessons with year 8 on Christian living which included lots of space for the students to question the team about their faith. They also did lessons on marriage with years 9 and 10 which produced some great questions and discussion and also gave opportunity to talk about forgiveness. The students were really great and they even had the opportunity to open the bus at lunchtime with students swarming onto the bus to take a look.

Amy was among the team of volunteers that helped at Greensward.

Simon Ford the project coordinator said:

‘Amy and the other volunteers were really enthusiastic and picked up the lesson plans really quickly. It can be a daunting thought to come into a school and teach but everyone found the structure and content of the lessons enabled them to really get involved with the lessons and facilitate the groups’.

For more information the work of the Route One Bus please visit their website.
